Above Painscastle the moorland road across the Radnor Hills to Rhulen rises steeply and as you ascend the view becomes increasingly panoramic. Looking south-east across the valley of the River Bachawy, the impressive massif of the Black Mountains above Hay-on-Wye dominates the skyline.
