The last crossing of the River Usk before it meets the sea, the Newport Transporter Bridge dates from 1906. This unusual design was chosen because sufficient clearance for ships was needed, making a conventional bridge impractical, and because the very large tidal range meant that a ferry was not viable option. Cars and pedestrians are carried on a 'gondola' which is suspended from steel cables beneath a horizontal beam which is supported at each end by steel towers which are 74 metres high.
