At the foot of the steep flight of steps which lead up to the coastal path on the southern side of the harbour mouth at Porthgain stands a small whitewashed stone building. This is where the harbour pilot worked from, helping to guide boats into the harbour - as many as 20 a day at the peak of production - to collect their cargoes of slate, bricks and road stone.
