By the harbour at Porthgain, the large brick structure is a series of hoppers which were used for storage of the various grades of road stone produced from the dolerite, a hard volcanic rock, which was extracted from the quarry which is quarter of a mile along the coast from the village. This historic stucture - unused since the quarry closed in 1932 - is now a scheduled ancient monument.
