Cardiff is a refreshingly low-rise city, and the clock tower on the City Hall, which stands in Cathays Park directly north of the commercial centre, is an elegant, well proportioned landmark. A competition held for the design of this important civic building was won by architects Lanchester, Stewart and Rickards. Construction took four years, and was completed in 1904 at a cost of £125,000.
