Carmarthenshire's seat of local government is a large building which dominates the town, standing above the River Towy on the site of the town's castle. The castle became Carmarthenshire's prison in 1789, and a gaol was built on the site in 1869. This was demolished to make way for County Hall which was designed by renowned architect John Nash.
