Built between 1387 and 1386, Newport Castle replaced an earlier motte and bailey which was near the Catherdral. Although the castle was extended in the early 1500s its useful life was only about 200 years, and much of it was in ruins in the 1700s. Hemmed in by Newport's ring road and a railway bridge, only a small corner of the original site remains. There is no public access to the castle currently.
