Blaenavon, Gwent
The winding gear at the Big Pit is still in everday use, no longer carrying working miners but instead transporting visitors to Wales' national coal museum to the coal face for an underground tour of the 300ft mine shaft. Across the valley can be seen the small town of Blaenavon where most of the miners lived.
