Barmouth, Gwynedd

On the slopes of Dinas Olau above Barmouth is a small walled area. Known as the Frenchman's Grave, this is the burial place and memorial of Auguste Guyard, a French philosopher who came to Barmouth after fleeing from the Siege of Paris. On the wall is a plaque which says:

Here lies a sower who
Sowed right up to the grade,
Truth, goodness and beauty,
with idolatry,
Through a thousand battles of
the pen and of the hands.
Such works in this world are not compensated for.

The Frenchman's Grave is a good vantage point for views over the harbour, Mawddach Estuary and down the coast towards Fairbourne.
